An acute reaction to a shock event paralyzes a person's cognitive functions, switching the nervous system into biological survival mode. Crisis intervention is not aimed at deep psychotherapy, but at urgently restoring control over the body and emotions.
The task of a specialist or a person providing support is to stop the panic spiral and return the victim to objective reality. A strict sequence of actions prevents the fixation of a traumatic experience in the subconscious.
Stabilization of the physiological state
At the moment of hyperexcitation, the sympathetic nervous system releases critical doses of adrenaline, causing tachycardia and shallow breathing. Attempts to have logical conversations at this stage are useless, as the prefrontal cortex of the brain is blocked by stress.
The first stage of care is based on somatic grounding:
- shifting the focus of attention to physical sensations and support underfoot;
- regulation of the respiratory rhythm through prolonged exhalation for four counts;
- performing simple motor commands (clench your fists, take a sip of water).
Tactile contact is allowed only after verbal permission. If a person is hysterical or trembling, it is necessary to allow the nervous system to respond to tension through movement, ensuring physical safety and eliminating the risk of injury.
Containerization and verbalization of emotions
When the amplitude of panic decreases, the psyche begins to realize fragmentarily what has happened, which is accompanied by outbursts of aggression, crying or stupor. At this stage, the specialist acts as a "container", able to accept and withstand the pain of others without condemnation.
The communication algorithm eliminates cliched consolations:
- specific closed-ended questions are asked about the current state and needs;
- active listening is used with the repetition of the victim's key phrases;
- any emotional reactions are validated as normal in abnormal circumstances.
Phrases like "calm down" or "everything will be fine" devalue the scale of the tragedy in the eyes of a person. It is much more effective to pronounce the facts of what is happening in the present tense, helping the psyche to assemble the disparate details of the event into a single chronological picture.
Resource recovery and routing
The final stage of emergency care is aimed at forming a short-term action plan. After the adrenaline subsides, a phase of acute asthenia begins, when the victim does not have the strength to make global decisions.
This requires directive support with a clear delegation of tasks:
- identification of priority household steps for the next two hours;
- transfer of a person into the hands of relatives, doctors or social services;
- fixing contacts for possible subsequent communication.
A person is brought out of the victim's state through the transfer of feasible microcontrol over the situation. Engaging in simple actions (collecting documents, calling loved ones, putting on a jacket) switches the brain from the emotional register to the logical one, completing the cycle of primary crisis intervention.
